Pedro II (1831-1889) laid the foundation stone of the building on June 10, 1880 , and her daughter , Princess Elizabeth , along with her husband , the Count d'Eu , inaugurated on September 10 , 1887.The facade , inspired by the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon , was crafted by Joseph Germano Salle Stone lioz in Lisbon and brought by ship to Rio The four statues that adorn depict , respectively , Pedro Alvares Cabral , Luís de Camões , Infante Henry and Vasco da Gama . The medallions on the facade depict , respectively , the writers Fernão Lopes , Gil Vicente , and Alexandre Herculano Almeida Garrett .The interior also follows the neomanuelino in style shutters , wooden shelves for books and memorials . The ceiling of the Reading Room has a beautiful chandelier and a skylight in iron structure , the first example of this type of architecture in Brazil .
